Since more and more homes are equipped with dishwashers, it is normal for the dishwasher detergent demand to increase. And, due to this fact, the market is full of all types of dishwasher detergents. The question that probably pops into your mind is what type of detergent to use. Well, what I have learned is that quality means expensive, so don’t expect to get great results from a cheap non-brand name dishwasher detergent.
But, there are some other things you should know about dishwasher detergents. For example many people don’t know exactly how much detergent to put in the dishwasher. In most cases, you should read the label on the dishwasher detergent. Yet, there are some tricks about this. If you have a soft water, it is preferable to use a little less detergent than recommended.
On the other hand, if your water is hard, it is recommended to use a little more detergent. This way, you will get the best “clean” possible. Also, in case you wonder, and I am sure you have, when it comes to this type of detergent you can use all types of detergent: powder, gel or tablet automatic dishwasher detergent. Another important point to remember: never use liquid hand dishwashing detergent in your dishwasher. There are both hygienically and technical reasons for that.
Also rinse agents are important. A rinse agent is a special additive which makes water "wetter". Simply put, this means that the water in the dishwasher sheets off dishes more readily and all the residues are rinsed away. What are the results? First, this means your dishes will come off with fewer water spots. And in case your water is harder than usual (this means your water contains dissolved mineral salts, such as calcium and magnesium) this will be of great help. Another great advantage of using rinse agents is that all your dishes will dry more quickly.
Another important aspect related to dishwasher detergent that you must keep in mind is that automatic detergent can not be used for other purposes. Some other cleaning products have several purposes, but this type of detergent is only designed for dishwashers, and it can even harm other surfaces. So keep it away from windows, sinks and so on. Also remember to store it in dry conditions. If your detergent picks up moisture, it won’t be as efficient as before. Also keep it away from children, pets and store it in a cool place with a dry surface.
